How do you convert price per kg to price per lb?

Divide the price per kilogram by 2.205 to get the price per pound, or multiply a per-pound price by 2.205 to go the other way. Beef at $22.00 per kilogram is $9.98 per pound — the same price, and the per-pound figure always looks smaller.

Canadian supermarkets use both, on the same shelf

Federal regulations require metric pricing, and retailers may also show imperial. In practice this means a meat counter often advertises the per-pound price in large type with the per-kilogram price beside it in small type.

That is not deceptive on its own — both figures are correct. It does make comparison across products genuinely awkward, because the eye lands on whichever number is larger on the sign rather than on a consistent unit.

The comparison panel below converts both to a common unit so the cheaper product is unambiguous.

      The conversion

One kilogram is about 2.205 pounds.

      • price per lb = price per kg ÷ 2.20462
      • price per kg = price per lb × 2.20462
      • $22.00/kg ÷ 2.20462 = $9.98/lb
      • $9.98/lb × 2.20462 = $22.00/kg
      • price per 100 g = price per kg ÷ 10

The per-pound figure is always the smaller number for the same product, because a pound is less than half a kilogram. A price that looks lower is not automatically better value — it may simply be quoted in a smaller unit.

Price per 100 grams is often the most useful comparison unit of all, because it is what most packaged goods carry on the shelf label and it puts everything on the same footing regardless of pack size.

Worked example: two cuts of beef

One package is marked $9.99 per pound, another $19.99 per kilogram. Which is cheaper?

      1. First: $9.99/lb × 2.20462$22.02/kg
      2. Second: already per kg$19.99/kg
      3. Difference$2.03/kg
      4. As a percentage9.2% cheaper

The second package is cheaper by $2.03 per kilogram, despite the first showing a smaller number on the label.

This is exactly the comparison that goes wrong at the counter. $9.99 reads as cheaper than $19.99 at a glance, and it is not.

      Getting more from unit pricing

      • Compare everything in the same unit — per kilogram or per 100 grams
      • Watch for products priced per item where the sizes differ
      • Bulk packs are not automatically cheaper per unit; check rather than assume
      • Meat priced per pound with bone in is not comparable to boneless per kilogram
      • Shelf labels usually carry a small unit price — it is the most reliable figure on the sign

      Common questions

How many pounds in a kilogram?

About 2.20462. For mental arithmetic, doubling and adding 10% gets you close — 5 kg is roughly 11 lb, against an exact 11.02 lb.

Why does the per-pound price look cheaper?

Because a pound is less than half a kilogram, so the same product always shows a smaller number when priced per pound. It is the same value quoted in a smaller unit, not a better deal.

Which unit should I compare in?

Whichever you use consistently. Price per 100 grams is often the most practical, because packaged goods usually carry it on the shelf label and it works across very different pack sizes.

Is it legal to price only in pounds in Canada?

Metric pricing is required, and imperial may be shown alongside it. That is why you see both on the same sign, which is what creates the comparison problem in the first place.
