These are the figures we verified on 2026-08-01. Change them to work with a historic period, or with a new rate that has been announced but which we have not published yet.

Quebec's QST is charged on the pre-GST price, so the two are simply added.

Estimate only. Sales tax rules are more than a rate. Zero-rated and exempt supplies, place-of-supply rules for goods and services crossing provincial borders, point-of-sale rebates and registration thresholds all change what is actually owed, and none of them are modelled here. This calculator applies a rate to an amount. For anything you are invoicing, remitting or filing, confirm the treatment with the CRA, Revenu Québec or your accountant.

What is the combined GST and QST rate in Quebec?

The combined rate is 14.975%. Quebec charges 5% GST and 9.975% QST, and since 1 January 2013 both are calculated on the selling price before any tax. The QST is not charged on the GST, so the two rates are simply added rather than compounded. On a $100 sale the tax is $14.98, not $15.00.

    The compounding question, settled

Quebec is the one province where the arithmetic genuinely changed, and a lot of published guidance never caught up. Before 2013 the QST was calculated on the selling price plus the GST, which meant the taxes compounded. Since 1 January 2013 both taxes are applied to the same pre-tax figure.

The difference is small on a coffee and material on a contract. Compounding a $10,000 sale gives $11,547.38. Adding the rates correctly gives $11,497.50 — a gap of $49.88 that would sit in the wrong place on a return.

The calculator above shows both figures side by side so the difference is visible rather than asserted. Only the added figure is correct today.

    How the calculation works

Two taxes, one base, no stacking.

    • GST = price × 0.05
    • QST = price × 0.09975 ← on the price, not on price + GST
    • total = price × 1.14975
    • Working backwards from a total:
    • price = total ÷ 1.14975

The QST rate is 9.975%, not 9.98% and not 10%. That awkward third decimal is deliberate: it is what remained after Quebec removed the compounding in 2013 while keeping the effective tax burden roughly unchanged. Rounding it to 10% overstates the tax on every transaction.

In French these appear on receipts as TPS (taxe sur les produits et services) and TVQ (taxe de vente du Québec). They are the same two taxes.

Worked example: a $1,200 contract in Montreal

You are billing $1,200 before tax for work delivered in Montreal and need the total and the two tax lines for your return.

    1. Price before tax$1,200.00
    2. GST = 1,200 × 0.05$60.00
    3. QST = 1,200 × 0.09975$119.70
    4. Total tax$179.70
    5. Total to invoice$1,379.70

Invoice $1,379.70, remitting $60.00 of GST to the CRA and $119.70 of QST to Revenu Québec.

Had the QST been charged on the GST-inclusive figure of $1,260, it would have come to $125.69 instead — $5.99 too much. Revenu Québec administers both taxes in Quebec, but they remain two separate taxes on one return.

How Quebec differs from the rest of Canada

    • Quebec is the only province charging a provincial rate with three decimal places
    • Revenu Québec, not the CRA, administers both the GST and the QST within Quebec
    • QST registration thresholds and filing deadlines follow Quebec's own rules
    • Some supplies zero-rated for GST are treated differently for QST purposes
    • Receipts show the taxes as TPS and TVQ rather than GST and QST

    Assumptions and limits

This calculator applies the standard rate to a fully taxable supply made in Quebec.

    • Zero-rated and exempt supplies carry no tax and are not modelled here
    • Insurance premiums are subject to a separate 9% tax rather than QST
    • Place-of-supply rules decide whether Quebec's rates apply at all on a cross-province sale
    • Rounding is applied once at the end rather than per line item
    • This is a calculation aid for invoicing and bookkeeping, not tax advice

    What has changed, and when

Rates on this page have not always been what they are today. If you are working on an earlier period, use the figure that applied at the time rather than the current one.

    1. From 1 January 2013 QST is calculated on the price excluding GST, so the two taxes add to 14.975% rather than compounding. The rate was set at 9.975% at the same time.
    2. Until 31 December 2012 QST was charged on the GST-inclusive price, so the taxes compounded. Guidance written before 2013 and never revised still describes this method.

    Common questions

Is QST charged on top of GST?

Not since 1 January 2013. Both taxes are now calculated on the selling price before any tax, so they add together rather than compounding. The combined rate is 14.975%. Guidance published before 2013 describing QST as applying to the GST-included price is out of date.

What is the QST rate in Quebec?

9.975%. Combined with the 5% federal GST, the total sales tax on a taxable supply in Quebec is 14.975%. The three-decimal rate is intentional and rounding it to 10% overstates the tax charged.

What do TPS and TVQ mean on a Quebec receipt?

TPS is taxe sur les produits et services, the French name for the GST. TVQ is taxe de vente du Québec, the QST. They are the same two taxes described in this calculator, shown under their French names.

Who do I remit Quebec sales tax to?

Revenu Québec administers both the GST and the QST for businesses operating in Quebec, so both are reported on a combined return to Revenu Québec rather than to the Canada Revenue Agency. This is unique among the provinces.

How do I remove GST and QST from a total?

Divide the tax-included total by 1.14975. A $114.98 total gives $100.00 before tax, of which $5.00 was GST and $9.98 was QST. Switch this calculator to "tax included" and it does the division and the split for you.
